First Annual 3 on 3 Ball Hockey Tournament

On February 17, 18, 19, at Stonebridge Town Centre in the Walmart parking lot, Wasaga Beach’s first annual 3 on 3 ball hockey tournament will take place! Competitors can enter to play in one of the three different divisions: junior (elementary school age), Intermediate (high school age) and over 18+. All teams are guaranteed three, 30 minute games and have a maximum of 7 players per team.

Wasaga Beach "Do Good" Campaign

During the month of February, OPP Officers will be stopping people in Wasaga Beach not for a ticket but to receive a “Do Good” coupon booklet to reward good actions or behaviour. 17 businesses in the community are participating in the “Do Good” campaign. Coupons range from a free butter tart and a coffee from Grandma’s Beach Treats to a $10 coupon for participating stores in Stonebridge Town Centre.

What can you expect to be pulled over for doing? Wearing a seatbelt, giving the right of way to pedestrians or simply pulling over to text or take a phone call. The OPP are on the look out!

Coupons have been provided by Beach Builders Home Hardware, Grandma's Beach Treats, Water Depot, My Computer People, Clearview Security Systems, Liberty Tax Service, Active Healthcare Centre, Canadian Tire, Wasaga Sands Golf Club, Harvey's, Travelworld, the YMCA, Dr. Dina Ghobrial Dentistry, Georgian Bay Optometry Clinic, TD Canada Trust, Benjamin Moore and Stonebridge Town Centre.

Film Festival Results are In!

Last Saturday, January 21st, Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival held their Recognition and Awards night at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex. There was fourteen films judged within two categories and the winners were picked based on their online YouTube views and votes cast at the two public screenings held earlier in the day. Action News created by the Wasaga Sun won Platinum in the category General Submissions Best Film and The Beach is Just the Beginning by Reg Sheffield and Orval Thompson won Platinum for Documentary Best Film. Each film entered had to be shot in Wasaga Beach or be about Wasaga Beach. Congratulations to the winners and to everyone who participated and made the event such a success!

The library also offers a series of computer courses such as: Intro to Twitter, How to Use Your iPod, Intro to Blogging and Basic Website Creation. Begin With Books- Wednesdays at 10:30 - 11:00 a.m. Jan. 4-25, Apr. 4-25. Ages 3 to 5. Creative activities help youngsters prepare for JK/SK, develop independence and socialization skills at their own pace. Registration is required. NOTE: Parents/guardians are required to remain in library while youngsters attend programs.

2012 Learn Something New- Wednesdays, 7 p.m. Experience a variety of new skills and ideas. Please register, as space is limited.

Story Time for Tots- Jan. 12-May 17. 10:30 am. Ages 2-5 with parent or guardian. Join in the fun. Weekly themes, stories, poems and craft. This drop in program introduces patience and cooperation.

Family Literacy Day- Friday, Jan. 27. 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. All ages. Encouraging everyone to share literacy with their families by offering a selection of games, activities and simple ideas to inspire reading together & creative ways to motivate literacy. AirPlay Direct Announces Top 5 Finalists

Mati Haskell was announced in the “Top 5” as a finalist in AirPlay Direct’s first ever “Win an Americana Record Deal” contest. Haskell performed this summer at Stonebridge Blues, a concert series at Stonebridge Town Centre.

Winter has arrived in Wasaga Beach!

Winter is here and there are plenty of fun winter activities to do in Wasaga Beach to keep you busy this season. The Oakview Woods outdoor skating rink is a great way to get some exercise and get outside. Public skating is Tuesday and Friday’s from 5pm-9pm and on weekends 12-9pm. Shinny hockey is also available Monday, Wednesday and Thursday’s from 5-9pm. Only $2 dollars for a full day of skating.

Grab your cross country skis or snow shoes and spend the morning or afternoon going through Wasaga Beach’s Ganaraska trail with family and friends. Head over to Williams Arnill Memorial Park with your GT or toboggan or take a walk on along the beach. After spending hours outside, stop by Stonebridge Town Centre and warm up with a hot chocolate.

First Annual International Wasaga Short Film Festival

A public viewing of the videos entered into the first annual International Wasaga Short Film Festival will be held on Saturday, January 21st, 2012. The viewing will start at 11 am – 3 pm in the Oakview Room at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex. Tickets are $3 dollars, which includes popcorn, refreshments and door prizes. You will be able to vote for your favourite video!

Outdoor Rink Now Open

The Oakview Woods outdoor skating rink is now open. Located next to the Wasaga Beach RecPlex, the rink offers music during supervised hours, heated change room and washrooms. New lighting this year has been funded through the donation from Carly’s Angels, a local charity.

During the season, public skating will be Tuesdays and Fridays from 5pm to 9pm and weekends and holidays from noon until 9pm. Shinny hockey will be offered on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday’s from 5pm to 9pm. All shinny players are required to wear C.S.A approved helmets. A full day admission costs only $2 dollars per person and group rates are always available.

The ice is available for private rental after 9pm. For more information, contact the Oakview Woods Rink at 429-2414. Weather permitting the rink will remain open until the end of March Break, for skaters of all ages and skill level.

Breakfast with Santa/ Funderland

Before heading over to Funderland, stop by the Lions Den (Wasaga RecPlex) for Breakfast with Santa on Sunday November 27th. The Lions club members are cooking a pancake breakfast from 9 to 11am. Admission is only $3.00 for an adult and $2.00 for children under 10. Children of all ages will have the chance to get their picture taken with Santa and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate. Tickets are available at the door.

Funderland will be taking place on Sunday, November 27th from 9 am until 2 pm at the Wasaga Beach RecPlec (1724 Mosley Street). This is a free event, however a donation to the food bank is appreciated. Activities include face painting, jumping castle, build your own birdhouse, an obstacle course, make your own jewelry, crafts and much more! Santa Claus is Coming to Town

The Wasaga Beach Santa Claus Parade will be held this weekend, on Saturday November 26, starting at 2pm. The parade starts at 22nd Street and then heads down Mosley Street and finishes at the RecPlex Community Centre. Directly following the parade, come into the Community Centre for Santa’s Reception, enjoy a treat and visit with Santa. The awards for best floats and bicycle-decorating contest will be given out. Official SGB Bicentennial War of 1812 Event

The Nine Mile Portage, an ancient native trail, once formed a land bridge between Kempenfelt Bay and the Nottawasaga River enabling a continuous trade and transportation route from Lake Ontario through to Georgian Bay for many centuries.

During the War of 1812, the British military improved the route for the transport of supplies and personnel as the lower lakes were occupied by the Americans following the Battle of Put-in-Bay. This land route became strategically important in keeping the captured American Fort of Mackinaw supplied and in British hands. Following the War, the route remained active and, what was known as "the portage landing", grew into the community we know today as Barrie, Ontario.

The Nine Mile Portage/ Celebrate Barrie event is looking for participants for their Official SGB Bicentennial War of 1812 on May 31st through June 3rd 2012 event at Heritage Park on the waterfront in downtown Barrie. They are looking for:

British & American Military Units, Individuals & Encampments
Period Musical Performers & Fife and Drum Groups 
Period Demonstrators, Artisans, Entertainers and Merchants 
Native & Voyageur Units, Individuals & Encampments 
Artillery Crews and Cannons/Artillery Encampments 
Tall Ships, Long Boat, Canoes, Crews and Boats with Cannons & Encampments

All participants will be compensated for attending and providing wholesome education and public orientated programming. If you are available to attend the event please submit a proposal as soon as possible  with the following information from you or your unit/group:

10th Annual Christmas at the Beach Tour of Homes

The Kinette Club of Wasaga Beach will be hosting their 10th Annual Christmas at the Beach Tour of Homes, Artisan and Craft Show and Tea Room on Saturday, November 12th and Sunday, November 13th. Seven unique homes will be professionally decorated for the holiday season, showcasing home décor products from area businesses. After touring some of the homes on the tour, head over to the Oakview Room in the Rex Plex and take a look around the Artisan and Craft Show. Don’t forget to stop by the Tea Room for a snack.

The event is a fundraiser for the Kinettes. All proceeds go to the service club's community projects.

Last weekend at Stonebridge Roots, the summer long raffle for the Stonebridge Guitar came to an exciting finish! Brenda Wansbrough was the lucky winner of a full-sized concert guitar (a G23CR, a Grand Auditorium model, which has a MSRP of $3000) donated by Stonebridge Guitars. Stonebridge Guitars are hand made professional instruments made in the Czech Republic and is recognized as one of the best of it’s kind. $1812.00 dollars was raised and accepted on behalf of the library to be used towards the new Wasaga Beach Public Library, whose new home will be at the Stonebridge Town Centre.

Stonebridge Town Centre presented its third free outdoor summer music festival on Saturday, September 17th. Stonebridge Roots was a huge success, people were excited to see Roots Artist of the Year Jimmy Rankin, talented Katherine Wheatley and Fred Eaglesmith perform from 2-5pm. The cool, cloudy fall weather was replaced by brilliant sunshine in the afternoon. The all ages’ audience who came to listen had a great time listening to the music, checking out the merchandise and information in the vendor’s area, and enjoying the food. Jimmy Rankin will be performing at Stonebridge Roots on September 17th, 2011 from 2 to 5pm at Stonebridge Town Centre. Jimmy is a Canadian country and folk artist, he is a part of The Rankin Family, but has also released his fourth solo album Forget About the World in April 2011. On September 17th, 2011, Fred Eaglesmith will be taking the stage at Stonebridge Roots from 2 to 5pm at Stonebridge Town Centre. Fred Eaglesmith grew up in Southern Ontario, in a family of nine children. Eaglesmith won a Juno Award for Best Roots and Traditional Album. He is the only Canadian composer to hold the #1 spot on the American Bluegrass chart for his song, “Thirty Years of Farming.” Stonebridge Roots will also feature Katherine Wheatley and Jimmy Rankin.

Copper Kettle Festival

Creemore’s annual Copper Kettle Festival takes place this Saturday, August 27. Come experience an old-time village fair; wander down the main street, taste some local fare and specialty foods, check out wares from local merchants, and stop off for refreshments at the beer garden near their main stage at the brewery. This year’s festival includes live music including favourites Beinn Gorm Highlanders and George Cash. Since the Copper Kettle Festival began, this one-day event has attracted more than 35,000 people to the village and gets bigger and better drawing in more visitors every year. Entrance is free. The festival continues rain or shine from 12pm to 6pm on Saturday, August 27th.

She began songwriting, without her guitar as she traveled around Africa by herself for 3 months. She plays over 100 concerts a year in Canada and the U.S at mostly acoustic venues and folk festivals. She spends a large portion of time running Youthsongs, a music program with inner city children and on native reserves. The program helps young people write and record their own songs. She has produced over 13 school CDs in the last three years. Stonebridge Roots will also feature Fred Eaglesmith and Jimmy Rankin.

Blues duo, Michael Sloski and Lance Anderson will be playing at Stonebrige Blues on August 6th from 2-5pm at Stonebridge Town Centre. Michael began his professional career in 1971 playing drums and Lance plays bass using both feet on the Harmmond Organ foot pedals. Check out this video to better understand this lost art.

On July 1st, Canadian’s in Wasaga Beach celebrated the 144th anniversary of Canada at Stonebridge Town Centre. The day was a huge success and everyone had a great time celebrating together. Children had a great time on the large obstacle course and bouncy castle, while others enjoyed Little Ray’s reptile shows and the BMX expert stunt shows. The audience was surprised and amazed at the BMX athletes as they propelled themselves to shocking heights and executed a variety of aerial maneuvers. As night fell, crowds gathered to watch the astonishing fireworks displays.

Little Ray’s reptile show is at 11:30am, 2 and 4 pm. This interactive show will include pythons, alligators, lizards, huge turtles, tortoises and more! The BMX expert stunt show is at 12:30pm and 3pm. The BMX athletes will propel themselves to astonishing heights and execute a variety of aerial maneuvers.

Last Saturday, June 18th, Stonebridge Town Centre hosted Stonebridge Country an outdoor country music festival. It was the perfect day for live music and everyone had a wonderful time. The audience sitting around the music pavilion in their lawn chairs enjoyed. The outdoor concert featuring the JK Gulley Band, Kaitlin Kozel, Jamie Warren, and award-winner and Order of Canada recipient, Carroll Baker and her Baker Street band.

Stonebridge Boulevard and the Stonebridge Town Centre parking lots were packed with over 600 people. 21-year-old, Kaitlin Kozel, impressed the audience and many came to listen to Juno Award winner Carroll Baker. There was an elderly man dancing along in his lawn chair to Carroll Baker.

The audience had a great time and everyone is looking forward to the next free festival at Stonebridge on August 6th, details to come!

Old Navy’s ‘Show Your Canada Love’ campaign will be taking place throughout the month of June leading up to Canada Day (July 1st). Old Navy’s campaign is about showing your Canadian patriotism and getting ready for Canada Day. Old Navy is encouraging Canadians to express their patriot love by uploading images to Facebook.com/OldNavyCanada showing their personal interpretation of patriotism or a family photo of a memorable Canada Day celebration. For every picture posted until July 1st, Old Navy will donate $2 to Boys and Girls clubs of Canada. Old Navy will donate up to $10 000 Canadian via the Facebook challenge.

Life at Stonebridge has strings attached— guitar strings that is. On June 18 the community will be hosting Stonebridge Country, a country music festival at the Music Pavilion in the Stonebridge Town Centre, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

This free, outdoor concert will feature: the JK Gulley Band, Kaitlin Kozel, Jamie Warren, and award-winner and Order of Canada recipient, Carroll Baker and her Baker Street band. The event is open to everyone.

“The whole focus of the Stonebridge Town Centre, was to create a mixed use sustainable development centred around a new town common or town centre. A town commons or centre that is sustainable provides a mix of uses including cultural events like Stonebridge Country,” says Mark Crowe, the developer and visionary behind this unique community.

JK Gulley, the musical director for Stonebridge Country is excited about the show. Gulley, a producer/guitarist/songwriter who grew up in Elmvale has deep family roots in this area and has watched it grow from a holiday resort town to a year round residential community. The entertainment at Stonebridge is a great way to show some appreciation for the community.

“Music is an important connector and brings people together,” Gulley says.

The performers
JK Gulley is the musical director for Stonebridge Country. This SOCAN and CCMA award-winner and has had more than 100 of his compositions recorded in Canada and Nashville.

Kaitlin Kozel, 21 of Mississauga, is a bright, young and fresh new talent with a beautiful voice steeped in the traditions of country and gospel music. Kaitlin is traveling to Nashville with producer JK Gulley to cut some tracks for her debut release this spring.

Jamie Warren is a contemporary country music mainstay, celebrating 30 years in music. His latest single is “Howl At The Moon” from the CD of the same name. Warren also has family in Wasaga Beach.

Carroll Baker, Order of Canada, is on her “Thanks for the Memories” tour with Baker Street and her daughter Candice. Now in semi-retirement Baker has numerous awards including Junos, gold and platinum records, and CCMA awards.

The Stonebridge Beach house is exclusively for the use of Stonebridge homeowners and features a large stone fireplace, games table, efficient kitchen and long porches on which to lounge. The stunning gazebo is a perfect place to relax and watch the action on the water.

18th Annual Wasaga Beach Lions Home & Garden Show

The Home and Garden Show will be held at the Wasaga RecPlex (1724 Mosley St.) on April 9 and 10. Hours are Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Admission for Adults is $2.00 and children under 12 are free. People everywhere give it a green thumbs up. The show will feature everything you need to get ready for spring, including home renovation, gardening and decorating tips. There will also be a silent auction, a draw, and door prizes. The Holmes family had been looking a new home and searched from Niagara Falls to Peterborough; they had visited Wasaga Beach too.

When they stopped for lunch at Boston Pizza at Stonebridge Town Centre, they went to the Stonebridge sales office and finally found their new home— after looking for two years; they moved to Stonebridge by the Bay last June.

“We like that it offered city amenities with a small town feel. We like the architecture of the homes, the year round entertainment, the beach, the ski hills in the winter,” Barb says.

Originally from Brampton, the Holmes’ work there during the week and head to Wasaga Beach on the weekends.

“When we come up on Fridays people are out on their porches, everybody’s waving when we come home. We know more people here in six months than 30 years in Brampton,” Barb says.

They love the developer’s vision for the community: being able to walk to shopping, banks, restaurants, the trails, the beach, the river, the community events, plus the look and quality of the homes, which reminds them of a Cape Cod type village.

“Mark Crowe had a vision, but we’re living it. We’ve haven’t been disappointed,” Craig added.

Craig says ‘spectacular’ is the word many residents use to describe everything at Stonebridge.

Signs of Spring!?

If the warmer weather has you thinking spring, now might be a good time to get outside and see just what mother nature is up to. Once good way to do this is to explore the Ganaraska Hiking Trail, which begins in Port Hope and ends at the Wye March Wildlife Centre in Midland. But along the way it winds it's way along the eastern side of Balsam Lake, then north of Lake Simcoe and through Wasaga Beach.

Sections 25-28 of the trail make up the Wasaga Beach section, which begins just south of Archer Road on River Road East. The trail winds through the fragile ancient sand dunes of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park to Wasaga Beach, providing great views of the Nottawasaga River far below. The trail then goes through the valley of the McIntyre Creek and passes along quiet country roads until it connects with the Mad River section. The section is about 51 kilometres long and suitable for novices.

Membership to the Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association is just $20 per family, per year, and guide books are available through their web site. www.ganaraska-hiking-trail.ca

Gina, Norm, their young daughter Katlyn, along their with their little dogs spend their weekends at Stonebridge by the Bay.

“We are thinking about retiring at Wasaga when our time comes,” Gina says. Originally from Etobicoke, the family loves their part- time community and Norm is already involved; he’s on the Phase 1 board of directors, a great way to get to know other residents.

“Our neighbours in Stonebridge are wonderful and kind,” Gina says. She loves that there is so much to do at Stonebridge by the Bay. The family has wonderful times with their neighbours in the summer and during the winter at events such as Snowman Mania. But that’s not all; this family really takes advantage of the natural amenities.

“Our favorite thing to do at Stonebridge by the Bay is going to the beach in the summer and entertaining in our backyard overlooking the beautiful trail,” Gina says.

Exploring the Trails

It was a great weekend so I decided it was time to take my bike out and give it some exercise! Riding near Wally Drive on the Dunes Trail and going past the beautiful homes at Stonebridge by the Bay when I arrived at Walden Pond and decided to take a water break. I headed into the Music Pavilion to sit in the shade and relax. I could have stayed for hours! There was even a little girl playing catch with her father that relaxed and energized me at the same time. I eventually got back on the bike and did a loop around the Stone Grove Trail – my favorite part because of all the trees. I did want to go a little further though, so I ventured out on the Silhouette Trail to find Serenity Pond. After another extended water break I completed a full loop of the trails by heading home on the Savannah Grove Park Trail. I really recommend spending some of your time on the trails and appreciate a little piece of what Stonebridge has to offer. I know I will be back as soon as my bike recovers from the trip.

Dog Days of Summer

A single rainstorm can produce 700 gallons of water running off your roof, that’s more than enough water to take 58 showers! By building your own rain barrel you will you be saving money on your water bill, helping the environment and your garden, and have some fun too!
